The learning environment needed to be encouraging and inviting. For this reason, the entire site utilizes colourful, energetic animation, interactive mini-games and an XML database which saves users previous sessions and rewards them as they make progress through each section.

The client had to compress over 30 hours of teaching time down to 8 hours of dialogue and 2 hours of activity time. Each script had to be sculpted and refined to convey the ideas in a concise manner. The real challenge for me was visually communicating the script so as not to clutter or deviate from their key ideas.

Native New Zealand birds will often interrupt an animation and argue between each other about the animations current subject. The idea behind this came from sitting in an actual Treaty class and noting the correspondence between the tutor and the pupils. The birds act as a way to emphasize or explain an idea that might otherwise be misinterpreted by the user.

The website also utilizes the interactive capabilities of Flash. Graphical information, such as statistical data, will often animate while the narrator is talking. After the narrator finishes, the information will often become “active” whereupon the user will be able to interact with the data at their own pace.
